Colet Assmann 0945054 Graphic Design. Assessments 3, date 12/18/2019.
Practices term 2.3: Commercial Pratice (New Frontiers), Social Practice (New Earth).

To introduce this portfolio, the most important feedback I got from the previous competency assessments was to explore my artistic vision, and figure out how this can be incorporated in my design approach. After the assessments I was really overwhelmed and the term ‘artistic vision’ seemed to hunt me. I was trying maybe too hard to come up words that would sound good as an artistic vision, rather then actually figuring out what fits my design fingerprint.

Last year, after the competency assessments I was looking for new interests and insights that I wasn’t finding in school. When I got in contact with the social practice I became very interested in observing others and spaces, learning about gender and culture studies. This gave me a safe feeling, and I wanted to keep incorporating this in my studies. I decided to start a new study next to my major in graphic design, namely cultural anthropology. I have started to develop my artistic vision around my multidisciplinary approach, where I combine my design interest in language and my anthropological interest in sociality. I felt unique and like my frame of reference made me stand out as a designer.

I really wanted to find an internship that would fit my new artistic vision. In June, 8 months before my actual internship, I was hired at Amerpodia. A collective of 4 culture houses in Amsterdam that organize socio-cultural and anthropological programs, where I will be working as a creative content intern. For this internship I will be designing a lot of digital media where I need to be able to code webpages. So for the last few months I have been training my coding skills, hands why my portfolio is a website. The timeline I chose as a factual design method, both visual and theoretical, and it communicates the most important snippets of a bigger event. This way I can give an overview of some important events from the past year.

Now that I have really made my studies my own, I want to use my minor to gain a lot of knowledge on topics that I want to communicate in my design work. I am applying to go to university to study full-time anthropology during my minor. In my last practice, cultural diversity, we have touched upon some anthropological topics that really have sparked my interest in where my multidisciplinary approach will take me. After the previous competency assessments I have realized that it’s highly important to be able to communicate what makes me as a designer stand out from the rest, and I think I am on the right track of exploring who I am as a designer.
